Review: Guppy Butter

"Guppy Butter" is a good storybook. The main character in the story wanted a puppy but when her father goes out to buy a pet, he comes back home with a guppy instead. The narrator was still grateful that she got a pet. She started to beam with pride and found things to decorate the fish bowl. First she grabbed some marbles, then she searched for a wooden letter block, and she dumped all of the objects into the bowl. There was one thing wrong…. She forgot to take her new fish out of his bowl. When she couldn't find him in the bowl she screamed “our new fish disappeared.” She later found the fish under the wooden block. Her father lifted the wooden block off of the fish and they were relived to see the fish move. However, the fish soon turned upside down and died in it’s bowl. 2 years later they got a new fish. This fish was different. He jumped out of his bowl a lot. One day he jumped out of his bowl while everyone was sleeping and landed on the butter sitting on the table. When the family went to eat the next morning instead of getting rid of the butter where they found their new fish Fido laid stiff as a board, the main characters brother cut the dead fish off of the butter and buttered his bread and enjoyed his morning breakfast as usual.

This story provides a kind of dark humor but also a valuable lesson about life and death. This story can help kids to understand that death and loss is a natural part of life. The story is also just good for a laugh and can be a great book for a kid who doesn't like to read since the plot will be unexpected.
