Review: The Adventures of Lenny Limbo Book II

The Adventures of Lenny Limbo Book II is about a curious young boy named Lenny who lives on the island of The Bahamas. The book follows Lenny as he tries to solve an old island riddle. Lenny’s curiosity will keep young readers entertained throughout the story. The authors uses both humor and a bit of mystery to help keep the story line interesting. I really like that the book introduces its readers, who are not from The Bahamas or who have not visited The Bahamas, to food and language unique to the island. After I completed the book the first thing I did was ask my mom about trying flour cake and sugar apples. This book is definitely great for native children but also a great way to introduce the Bahamian culture to children from other parts of the world.

The authors decision to add a cliff-hanger at the end of the story will definitely keep the reader guessing and wondering what Lenny will be up to next. I can't wait for more books from the author!!!

Want A Taste Of The Bahamas?

Here is a recipe for flour cakes!

Flour Cakes Are A Specialty Of Cat Island. What makes these cakes extra yummy is the hint of nutmeg in every bite.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 sticks of butter or margarine at room temperature

  • 3/4 of a cup of sugar

  • 1 tablespoon of ground OR grated nutmeg

  • 1/3 of a cup of milk OR evaporated milk

  • 4 cups of white flour

  • 1 cup of water

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon of salt

Combine the dry ingredients separately and place in a bowl. To this dry mixture add the sugar and the butter(or margarine). Then, slowly add the milk and water to this mixture. Stir until the mixture forms a sticky dough.

Sprinkle a thin layer of flour onto a clean surface and place the dough mixture onto the surface. Sprinkle a thin layer of flour onto the top of the dough. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out thinly until it is about ½ an inch in thickness. Use a round cookie cutter to cut the dough into circles. Place the flour cakes onto a greased baking pan.Place the baking sheet with the flour cakes into a PRE-HEATED Oven that is set to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bake for approximately 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
